Not all outdoor ceiling fans are made equally and it’s important to know the difference when choosing the right one for you. Outdoor ceiling fans are divided into two groups: damp rated outdoor fans and wet rated outdoor fans. Damp Rated outdoor ceiling fans can be used outdoors, but they must be installed under a solid roof. In other words, they cannot be exposed to water directly. Damp fans are ideal for covered outdoor areas.
Wet rated outdoor fans can be directly exposed to all outdoor elements and are great for almost any outdoor area. Wet rated have seals which enable the fan to withstand water. You can spray clean a wet rated fan with a hose.
If you live in an area that gets very windy, consider a heavier outdoor rated ceiling fan or a flush mount outdoor ceiling fan. The heavier fans can not be moved as easily as the lighter ones by the winds so we fan will endure them better. The lighter outdoor fans can be moved around by strong winds and we do a lot of replacement parts business in the spring to repair them. Flush mount fans are mounted directly to the ceiling with no stem so they do not move. Fan Diego has a store in the Palm Springs area and it gets very windy during the spring. The Hunter damp rated Outdoor Original is a good option as well as the Bolo Wet by Minka Aire, the Carrera Grande by Emerson and the wet rated Cyclone by Monte Carlo.
For flushmount outdoor rated fans, consider the wet rated Concept II and Traditional Concept by Minka Aire. Both fans come with remotes and light kits and only hang 11.75 inches from the ceiling. The Medallion Patio series by Quorum is another very good option.
