  • CEILING FANS: 3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

CEILING FANS: 3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Ceiling fans – even the best ceiling fans – may seem fairly basic, however, there is much more to them than may initially meet the eye. If you are looking to buy ceiling fans, there are three important things that you must know before pulling out your wallet and tool belt.

INDOOR CEILING FANS DON’TACTUALLY COOL THE ROOM

Surprising, right? But it’s true – indoor ceiling fans do not actually cool a room; rather, they cool the individuals who are in a room. The circulating air increases evaporation off of the skin; this creates a type of wind chill effect that cools the individual down even though it does not actually change the air temperature in the room itself.

Notably, since indoor ceiling fans do not actually cool a room’s temperature, they should be turned off when the room is not in use to save on energy expenditures and utility costs.

    CEILING FANS CAN ALSO HEAT

Indoor ceiling fans won’t heat quite like a furnace; however, they can help to save on heating costs.

Hot air naturally rises, but a ceiling fan can push that hot air back into the room. When the fan is changed to circulate in a clockwise direction, the blades will push air up, thus pushing warm air that has collected near the ceiling, back down in to the room. Pushing the warmer air back into the room and then circulating it will not only warm the space, but will warm it more evenly.

By using this approach, homeowners can save on utility costs and energy use.

    CHEAPER IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER

As with anything home related, budgets are a critical component. That said, there is a time to spend and a time to save. Although a low price tag can, understandably, be enticing, be wary of low prices when it comes to buying ceiling fans.

The best ceiling fans are smartly planned, efficient machines that leverage capable motors that use a proper number of RPMs (revolutions per minute) for the space. A weak motor will save on cost, but is likely to fail to generate an appropriate number of RPMs – or high enough fan speed – to effectively turn the blades to warm or cool the space. Additionally, the fan blade weight may be more than the motor can handle, straining the system. In turn, this will either create a noisy and off-balance fan or it may have a very short life. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to spend huge sums of money to buy the best ceiling fan for your home – there are many fans that provide proper efficiency and function for a good price. ENERGY SAVING INDOOR CEILING FANS – THE ENERGY STAR BENEFIT

INSTALL CEILING FANS TO SAVE ON COOLING & HEATING COSTS

Like many people, you may have installed or may presently be considering installing indoor ceiling fans for the benefits to your home’s heating and cooling efficiency. Ceiling fans can often prolong the time leading up to the hot summer months that you can forego running your home’s air conditioner, saving you on cooling costs while also being friendly to the environment. In the winter and cooler months, ceiling fans can be run in reverse to force the warmer air into the lower areas of the room, saving on heating costs. That said, many people wonder, since ceiling fans are already such great electricity savers, why the ENERGY STAR certification matters and exactly what it means for ceiling fans.

HOW ENERGY STAR CEILING FANS SAVE EVEN MORE!

The answer in its most basic form is quite simple: ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fans provide additional savings by producing effective results with minimal energy consumption. In fact, ceiling fans that are ENERGY STAR certified use approximately 50 percent less energy than their non-certified counterparts which results in an approximately $15 savings each year. Although that cost may seem slight upfront, consider the math – if you have one ENERGY STAR indoor ceiling fan that you use consistently over the course of 10 years, that’s $150 in savings. However, most homes contain more than one ceiling fan – so if you have three fans, that’s $45 a year.

Beyond the cost savings, many ENERGY STAR ceiling fans actually contain improved parts, such as enhanced motors and blade designs. Even better, the benefits of ENERGY STAR indoor ceiling fans extend beyond your own home to also provide benefit to our planet, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants caused by inefficient energy usage.

To assist homeowners with purchasing the ENERGY STAR ceiling fan that will work most effectively and efficiently in their home, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has provided guidance as to the proper fan blade size for the room – the recommendations are as follows:

The best ceiling fans will reduce your heating and cooling costs, be environmentally friendly, provide light and function to your home, as well as contribute to your home’s aesthetic. To learn more or to find the best ceiling fans for your home, contact us at 800-240-6267 or online.

10 WAYS THE BEST CEILING FANS BENEFIT YOUR HOME

Decorating your home should be a process of procuring the perfect items to complement both your design style as well as home’s function. Ceiling fans are an important component, as they provide both design aesthetic and functionality. When you buy ceiling fans, consider these 10 ways that they can benefit your home.

    1. Ceiling fan Lighting – Many of the best ceiling fans will include lighting in addition to the actual fan. This lighting comes in several options, from up lighting to down lighting in varying levels of brightness
    2. Circulation – Sometimes, you don’t need a cooler room – just air movement. Ceiling fans keep the air flowing through your home, ensuring that the environment does not become stale
    3. Lower Utility Costs – Ceiling fans often provide a great alternative to air conditioning in those spring and early summer months. Rather than turning on the AC which requires more energy, simply turn on fans to reduce your energy bills
    4. Stay Warm – Many of the best ceiling fans can rotate in two directions. While one direction does help cool the room, the other direction will push the hot air which rises back down into the room, helping to raise the overall room temperature while also keeping the airflow moving
    5. Keep the Outdoors BreezyOutdoor ceiling fans can help you to enjoy outdoor spaces in comfort even on warmer days. Consider adding them to a porch or covered deck to keep your skin cool, improving your level of comfort even in the hottest of months
    6. Set the Room’s Tone – The right ceiling fan can contribute to a room’s overall tone. Ceiling fans come in every color, a variety of finishes, and countless lighting styles. By including it in your room design, it can contribute to your overall aesthetic as well as lighting design
    7. Contribute to a Theme – While there are many ceiling fans that are built for function, ceiling fans also come in several novelty shapes. For example, a fan that features palm frond fan blades can be the perfect complement to a tropical getaway. Other fan blades look like airplane propellers or have favorite characters
    8. White Noise – Many people require a bit of subtle background noise in order to relax – this noise that slightly covers background noises, without actually producing noise that people focus on is called white noise; ceiling fans produce the perfect amount of white noise
    9. Keep on Cooking – Open concept homes are quite popular – meaning that the living area is often connected to the kitchen. Odors and smoke from unventilated ranges and ovens can quickly spread throughout the home, but ceiling fans can help to ventilate the space, clear the odor, and save the family from the noise of smoke detectors going off in the evening hours
    10. Discourage Pests – Because of their constant movement, ceiling fans discourage the presence of pests, such as insects. This is true for both indoor ceiling fans and outdoor ceiling fans

Bring the many benefits of a ceiling fan into your home by visiting Fan Diego online or one of our four southern California showrooms.
